Christian Hanson, who has 10 goals and 11 assists in 52 games, has been Hershey’s third-line centerman and a penalty-killing mainstay.

Initially, Christian Hanson figured it might be a routine visit to the locker room for stitches after a foe’s skate lacerated his right wrist Saturday night at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H.

“I didn’t really know the extent of it until later on,” Hanson said Tuesday.

A tendon was damaged. The Hershey Bears forward is scheduled to undergo surgery on the wrist Friday.

Hanson is being termed out week-to-week. Bears President-GM Doug Yingst said a determination on the length of rehabilitation needed will be made after surgery.

“We’ll kind of know more then on a timetable after that,” Hanson said.

Hanson, who has 10 goals and 11 assists in 52 games, has been Hershey’s third-line centerman and a penalty-killing mainstay.

At Tuesday’s practice at Giant Center, Cody Eakin was at third-line center flanked by left winger Kyle Greentree and rookie right winger Garrett Mitchell, who moved up from the fourth line.

“Garrett has shown in limited opportunities he’s got a real good shot, a real good work ethic about him, a real good pace,” Bears head coach Mark French said. “We thought we would try him there and see how he looked.”

Said Mitchell: “It’s too bad for Hance there. You never want to see that happen to anyone. It’s all part of the game. There’s going to be injuries and opportunities for guys. It’s something that I’ve got to jump out and take it.”

Mitchell’s performance has been on an upswing at a time in the season when many rookies start to fade.

“I think he’s got a lot of gas left in the tank,” French said.

“He comes from the Western Hockey League, so travel and schedule aren’t a big issue. He keeps himself in very good shape. He lives a very good lifestyle, so I’m not surprised he’s been able to not have some of those same things that happen to other young players happen to him.”

Mitchell, 20, played 70 games for the Regina Pats last season (and 71 in 2008-09).

“It’s pretty close to the same schedule,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been playing that for four years now.

“I guess I’m used to it. Just sticking to my game and things are going for me.”

FATHER’S DAY

Keith Aucoin, back from a recall to the Washington Capitals, and Boyd Kane, back from serving a three-game suspension, are slated to return to the lineup Wednesday night at Rochester. The Bears also visit Lake Erie on Thursday.

The Bears scored two or fewer goals in six of the nine games Aucoin, who was leading the AHL in scoring when he went up, was on recall.

“I’m excited to get back and help the team win,” Aucoin said.

The Caps held their annual father’s trip while Aucoin was on recall. Aucoin’s dad, Danny, an electrician, got to make the trip with his son and the Caps when they played the New York Rangers on Feb. 12 at Madison Square Garden.

“He had to get a couple days off, but it was worth it,” Aucoin said.

“Fathers live for stuff like that. They get to watch their sons on TV and then go through a whole weekend of traveling with the team and see what we go through on a daily basis. It’s one of those weekends you never forget.”

Aucoin said his father and mother, Diane, both played huge roles in his hockey development.

“My mom was jealous,” Aucoin said. “She wanted to be part of it.

“My mom wanted a mother’s weekend the next weekend.”

The Westminster Kennel Club dog show was held at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 13-14. Aucoin, the owner of a French bulldog, said he didn’t see any dogs arriving.

“I should have brought my dog,” Aucoin joked. “It would have been perfect for that thing.”

BLUE LINES

The Lake Erie game will mark a return to Cleveland for former Lock Monsters Mike Carman and Julien Brouillette. Graham Mink and Jacob Micflikier both previously played for Rochester.

Portland Pirates captain Dean Arsene, a former Bear, is scheduled to play his 500th AHL game Saturday.

Braden Holtby made 37 saves and added four more stops in a shootout won 1-0 by Bridgeport on a Jon Landry tally in the fifth round.

Goalie Braden Holtby continued his strong play in net for the Hershey Bears Sunday, but that wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-1 shootout loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Holtby made 37 saves and added four more stops in a shootout won 1-0 by Bridgeport on a Jon Landry tally in the fifth round.

Sound Tigers goalie Anders Nilsson (20 saves) only allowed a 5-on-3, power-play goal by Chris Bourque in the second period and stopped all five shootout bids he faced.

David Ullstrom also scored a second-period, power-play goal for Bridgeport.

Holtby (19-11-2) has stopped 129 of 133 shots (.970 save percentage) in his last four Hershey starts and has improved his overall save percentage to .911.

Nilsson (13-6-1) has gone 2-0-0 against Hershey with a 1.92 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage.

NOTEBOOK

The Washington Capitals reassigned Keith Aucoin to Hershey, but he didn’t play. Hershey has gone 4-3-0-2 in the last nine games without the centerman in the lineup.

Christian Hanson was sidelined by a lacerated wrist suffered Saturday night at Manchester.

Bourque (372 points) tied Ross Fitzpatrick for No. 15 on Hershey’s all-time points list.

Bridgeport has gone 15-1-0-1 in its last 17 games.

Hershey has failed to convert on 12 straight shootout attempts. The Bears have gone 5-5 in shootouts.

Ryan Potulny, getting his eighth two-goal game of the season, produced all of Hershey’s offense with a pair of second-period, power-play tallies.

Chris Bourque assisted on Potulny’s second goal to increase his point total to 71 and take the AHL scoring lead from Keith Aucoin (70). Bourque (371) is one point from tying Ross Fitzpatrick (372) for No. 15 on Hershey’s all-time points list.

NOTEBOOK

Bourque is two points from tying his career high for points (73) set in 2008-09.

Christian Hanson exited the game with a lacerated wrist but is expected to be able to play Sunday at Bridgeport.

Joel Rechlicz returned to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension.

Patrick McNeill (32 points), who had an assist, is tied with Peoria’s Danny Syvret, a former Bear, for No. 4 in AHL scoring by defensemen.

Potulny (19 goals) ranks third on the Bears in goal scoring behind Bourque (23) and Jacob Micflikier (21).

John Henderson (63) ranks No. 10 in all-time Hershey goalie wins.

Hershey improved to 16-7-2-1 on the road.

Azevedo has scored three goals in three games against Hershey.

Manchester has lost four in a row in regulation.

Jamie Tardif had a terrific game for the Providence Bruins Friday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.

In 20 minutes.

Tardif had a hand in three second-period goals to fuel what would end as a 6-0 win over the Hershey Bears.

Tardif scored twice and got an assist on a Kevan Miller knuckler fired from the neutral zone that eluded Bears goalie Dany Sabourin.

The P-Bruins added three more goals in the third in further support of goalie Michael Hutchinson, who had 23 saves in handing Hershey its second shutout of the season. Colby Cohen scored a power-play goal, and Craig Cunningham scored twice (once on the power play).

The six-goal margin was Hershey’s most lopsided loss of the season and its largest negative goal differential since a 7-1 loss at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Feb. 13, 2011. It was Hershey’s most decisive shutout loss since a 6-0 defeat by Hamilton on Oct. 29, 2008.

Sabourin (24 shots-21 saves) was replaced by Braden Holtby after Tardif’s second goal at 14:48 of the second.

NOTEBOOK

Matt Pope played his first Hershey game since Jan. 22.

WBS and Norfolk both won Friday night, dropping Hershey three points out of first place in the East Division.

Hershey has gone 2-3-0-1 against Atlantic Division teams. Every team in the Atlantic is above .500.

Hershey’s previous most lopsided loss this season was 4-0 at WBS on Nov. 4.

Former Bears defenseman Mark Wotton, who played on Hershey’s 2005-06 Calder Cup team, formally announced his retirement. He hasn’t played this season.

Hershey's captain gets an involuntary respite in the wake of a hit last Saturday on Worcester’s Curt Gogol.

Hershey Bears winger Boyd Kane is getting the weekend off.

Boyd Kane 2011-12Boyd Kane

But it is an involuntary respite for the club’s captain, suspended for three games in the wake of a hit last Saturday on Worcester’s Curt Gogol.

“It’s not something that I meant to do,” Kane said. “But it looks terrible on video, so I was expecting to get something. I didn’t think three games, but you’ve got to accept it.

“I didn’t mean to hit him from behind. Everything was standing still in the corner. I went in there trying to get the puck. He was in a vulnerable position. I caught him a bit, and he went into the boards pretty bad.”

Gogol was knocked out of the game. Kane, whose 117 penalty minutes rank No. 2 on the team behind Joel Rechlicz (198), was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct for the hit.

“I don’t think Boyd’s a dirty player,” Bears head coach Mark French said. “I think it was the right call. Boyd would be the first to admit that it wasn’t the right thing for him to do.

“Those things happen in hockey. He’s been punished for it. I think, overall, his discipline has been pretty good.”

Hershey, starting a season-long, five-game road stretch, visits Providence Friday, Manchester Saturday and Bridgeport Sunday.

Providence (6-2-2-0 in its last 10 games) and Bridgeport (8-1-0-1 in its last 10) are two of the hottest clubs in the AHL. And Manchester beat Hershey on Jan. 21 (5-4) and Jan. 22 (4-2) at Giant Center.

“It’s going to be character games for us, but I think it will help us build together as a team,” Bears forward Ryan Potulny said.

“Sometimes it’s fun to go on the road. You get away and you get together as a team.”

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Norfolk are tied for first place in the East Division. Second-place Hershey is one point behind, but the Bears have games in hand and actually own the top points percentage (.640) in the division and the second-best in the Eastern Conference.

The Bears will cap the five-game road stretch next week at Rochester (Wednesday) and Lake Erie (Thursday).

“That [stinks] when you’re healthy and you want to play and you can’t,” Kane said. “But it’s a good thing we have games during the week next week so I can get back at it.”

NOTEBOOK

The Bridgeport game, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., will be televised on WHTM-TV’s RTV Channel 27.2, Comcast Channel 246, Verizon Fios Channel 461, Blue Ridge Cable Channel 152 and Kuhn Communications Channel 67.

Providence (7,321 average) ranks second to Hershey (9,673 average) in AHL attendance.

D.J. King has been a positive presence and an admired teammate.

D.J. King has played 118 career NHL games and, according to CapGeek.com, has a one-way contract paying $650,000 in 2011-12.

Yet the winger was one of nine Hershey Bears players who participated in Tuesday’s optional practice at Giant Center.

It was another example of how King has been a class act in Hershey.

Rather than being disgruntled about being sent down by the Washington Capitals and then being frequently scratched in Hershey, King has been a positive presence and an admired teammate.

“I think he can be very proud of the fact that he’s handled it better than to be expected,” Bears head coach Mark French said. “He’s been a consummate team guy.

“Even when, after being sent down, he wasn’t in our lineup a lot, he was the first guy to the rink every day. Just ready to work and ready to listen and very low maintenance in terms of what he was demanding from a coach.”

During a stretch from Dec. 18-Jan. 21, King was a healthy scratch for 13 straight games.

“It’s out of my hands,” King said. “There’s no point of wasting energy on negative stuff when it’s out of my control. All I can control is coming to the rink every day. It’s my job. I just come to the rink, work hard and whatever happens, happens.”

The Feb. 2 trade that sent Danny Richmond to Lake Erie, coupled with Keith Aucoin’s recall to the Washington Capitals, alleviated Hershey’s veteran situation and opened lineup opportunity for King.

The 6-3, 230-pounder has played four of the last six games, recorded two assists and formed an increasingly effective fourth line with Andrew Carroll and Garrett Mitchell. The 27-year-old has played a dozen games in all.

“We’ve been very pleased with what we’ve seen most recently from him, which has been some really good play and some real good leadership,” French said.

“He’s a very calming presence for those two young players on the bench. He talks to them a lot in practice and in games. I think they like each other and they’re three ultra-competitive individuals.”

Rookie Mitchell looks up to his hulking linemate, both literally and figuratively.

“You just watch King,” Mitchell said. “There’s not too many guys in this league that can take the puck off him. Obviously, you see how big he is. Strength, I think he’s on another level with his strength.”

On Sunday against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, King assisted on a Mitchell goal with a nifty pass to the backdoor.

“That’s just practice,” King said. “Me and Mitch work on a lot of stuff in practice. My big body down low, I like to tell him to go in certain spots so I have room. I’ll just do my thing in the corners.”

King is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

“You never know with the game of hockey,” he said. “Stuff’s going to happen one day, and you never know when that door opens. So I just have to be ready. Right now, I’ve got a little window open. I’ve just got to make the best of it.”

BIG MAC ATTACK

Hershey defenseman Patrick Wellar on Sunday fought WBS’s imposing Steve MacIntyre, one of the most feared heavyweights in hockey, and lived to tell about it.

“We know the reputation he brings and how he’s fared over the last few years,” Wellar said. “Sometimes you’ve got to stand up for yourself. It’s not always fun when you have to face big guys like that who know what they’re doing.

“I don’t really have the luxury of turning people down. I think it comes with the role. It comes with the respect I have for the game. Sometimes you have to answer the bell whether you like it or not. I got out of it rather unscathed and I’m just happy to have gotten out of there.”

Wellar is 6-3, 210. But MacIntyre is 6-5, 250.

“It’s how big he was and how strong he was,” Wellar said. “But, not only that, how calm he was, really, during the whole thing. There’s guys when you’re in a fight, you’re jostling. I don’t want to say he was toying with me, but you can just tell you’re dealing with someone who is, quite frankly, a different animal.

“I knew that I was in trouble there. You try to stand up as best you can and try to fight your fight, I guess, but obviously while still respecting his power, because he can hurt you with both of his hands. He got me a couple good ones. It was good to just get that fight out of the way, because then he’s felt like he’s done his job and he can just continue playing hockey.”

Wellar also assisted on a Ryan Potulny goal in that game, and demonstrated some mobility reminiscent of Dmitry Orlov while doing it. The defenseman ventured deep into the offensive zone but got back near the blue line in time to retrieve the puck for a zone-keep that kept the scoring possession alive.

But, no, he doesn’t believe he should now be called Wellarov.

“I wouldn’t want to put myself in any type of category with Dmitry Orlov,” Wellar joked. “He’s a great offensive talent.”

The AHL meted out a three-game suspension to Hershey Bears winger Boyd Kane for his boarding major on Worcester’s Curt Gogol Saturday, and winger Joel Rechlicz got a one-game suspension for a cross-checking incident in the same game.

Kane will miss all three games this coming weekend.

“You hate to lose your captain for three games and Joel for one,” Bears head coach Mark French said. “I can’t say I’m overly surprised.”

Kane was one of eight skaters, along with goalie Dany Sabourin, who participated in Tuesday’s optional practice at Giant Center. There also was an off-ice workout.

“I think it’s probably our toughest stretch of schedule when you look at travel involved with the three games involved on the road this weekend, and then the short turnaround to play Rochester and Lake Erie on the road and come back,” French said.

“We’ve had the flu kind of going in and out of the room a little bit, some guys nursing and playing through some stuff. Sometimes a second day away from the ice is well contemplated to give them that extra little break they’re going to need before a tough stretch.”

Rechlicz, Keith Aucoin and Braden Holtby, reassigned by the Washington Capitals, weren’t on hand at Giant Center. It is possible that Aucoin’s reassignment is a paper transaction.

“I’m not sure what their time frame is for getting back,” French said.

Hershey capped a five-point weekend to move within one point of first-place WBS in the East Division.

When the Hershey Bears took a 3-0 lead against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins into the third period Sunday night at Giant Center, they were mindful of one thing.

Ryan Potulny 2011-12Ryan Potulny

The 3-0 lead they blew in a 4-3 loss to the Baby Pens on Feb. 3 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

There wasn’t a reprise in the final 20 minutes this time as Hershey padded the advantage en route to a 5-1 victory.

“You can’t walk away from the point that there was a dragon that needed to be slayed in the third period,” Bears head coach Mark French said. “History is an interesting thing. I’m sure the talk in their room was we had a 3-0 lead two weeks ago and we gave it up. But we weren’t going to repeat it.”

After the first 10 minutes of the first, the Bears summoned a commanding performance to cap a five-point weekend and move within one point of first-place WBS in the East Division.

Ryan Potulny and Jacob Micflikier scored two goals apiece and rookie Garrett Mitchell scored his third goal in the last six games. Hershey led 4-0 by the time Jason Williams spoiled a shutout bid by Bears goalie Braden Holtby (34 saves) midway through the third period.

“This was an important weekend for us, especially playing division teams like that,” Potulny said.

“I was happy with the way we came out, with the jump we had. The intensity was good all weekend.”

The Bears have won three of four and recorded points in four straight to regain traction in the wake of Keith Aucoin’s recall to the Washington Capitals and two trades as they head into a five-game road stretch.

The power play, emerging from a 0-for-11 rut, has gone 4-for-17 (23.5 percent) in the last three games.

“I think it took us a little bit of time to find our footing,” French said. “On our power play, everything goes through Keith, and Chris [Bourque] to a degree. So when you remove one of those key pieces, there’s an adjustment.”

Both of Micflikier’s goals were scored with the extra man as Hershey went 2-for-6 against WBS. But it did fail to score during a seven-minute power play, which included two minutes of 5-on-3, after WBS winger Brandon DeFazio was assessed an instigating minor, a fighting major and a game misconduct for repeatedly punching Bears defenseman Tomas Kundratek, who didn’t swing back.

DeFazio said it was in retaliation for an unpenalized elbow by Kundratek that cut WBS winger Paul Thompson and briefly knocked him out of the game.

“It was a guy sticking up for a teammate,” WBS head coach John Hynes said. “Any time there’s a hit to the head and there’s blood, there’s usually a penalty involved.

“I thought it was a player trying to make a team decision and stick up for his teammate and take care of him.”

Bourque had three assists to tie Aucoin for the AHL scoring lead at 70 points.

“I’m very happy for him that he’s up there,” Bourque said. “He’s doing well. He definitely deserves that opportunity. I definitely wouldn’t have these kind of numbers if it wasn’t for playing with him. It seems like we’ve had really good chemistry this year.”

Potulny genially declined to handicap a Bourque-Aucoin scoring race down the stretch.

“I’m not picking a winner out of those two,” Potulny said. “It will be fun, but I don’t think either of them really cares who gets it, I think. As long as the team does well they’re happy.”

Mitchell’s goal highlighted another strong game by the fourth line of D.J. King-Andrew Carroll-Mitchell. The trio has been particularly effective in the last three games against WBS.

“I don’t think we’ve done anything too special,” Mitchell said. “I think we’ve just kept it simple. Hard work pays off.

“We know our role. I’d say the last couple games here, we’ve played that pretty well. It’s just sticking to our plan.”

Mitchell increased his goal total to five.

“Garrett Mitchell has, in very small glimpses,” French said, “probably been our most improved player over the last 10 games.”

NOTEBOOK

Micflikier, second on the team with 21 goals, took over the AHL lead in power-play goals (13).

His Sharks had surrendered a go-ahead goal to the Hershey Bears with 2:01 left in the third period Saturday night at Giant Center, and a 2-1 loss seemed a probable outcome.

But a tripping call on Hershey’s Mike Carman with 1:23 left gave the Sharks a late power play and, with goalie Tyson Sexsmith pulled for an extra attacker, Worcester scored a tying 6-on-4 goal and went on to win 3-2 in a shootout.

“It’s a fun building to win it in and a fun way to win it,” Sommer said, “come from behind and win it in the shootout.

“They’re a good team. You get two points out of here, it’s not easy to do, whether it’s a shootout or whatever.”

“It’s been good,” Sommer said. “We’ve had some lean years and some good years. You don’t really think about it, but for a league that’s been around 75 years or whatever it is [76], it’s, I guess, a pretty good accomplishment.

“That’s just longevity and someone that believed in you.”

In a contest that featured more snarl than offense, Cody Eakin converted a Kyle Greentree rebound to give Hershey it’s one-goal lead before Kennedy’s tying tally. Worcester won the shootout on Brodie Reid’s conversion in the seventh round.

“We knew coming in it was going to be a battle,” Bears winger Chris Bourque said. “They’ve got a bunch of guys that are willing to battle and pay the price to win games.

“We knew we had to come out here and try to execute our game plan. I thought we did that pretty well for the most part. We just couldn’t get it done in the shootout.”

Worcester’s Jack Combs and Bourque traded power-play goals in the first.

The Sharks entered the game with a league-leading 80 majors, and an unpenalized hit that briefly sent Hershey’s Andrew Carroll to the locker room set a nasty tone.

“That’s a typical Shark game,” Sommer said.

“We know that’s how we have to play. If we don’t play like that, usually we’re not successful.”

Later in the first, Bears captain Boyd Kane got a boarding major and a game misconduct for a hit that knocked Curt Gogol out of the game. Combs’ goal was scored on the ensuing power play.

“Those kind of things happen in hockey,” Bourque said. “It’s tough when your captain goes out and you go down a forward, but I think we did a pretty good job of mixing lines and mixing and matching there.”

Kane fought Jimmy Bonneau in the wake of the Gogol board. Bears winger Joel Rechlicz had two fights, taking on Bonneau after fighting Matt Pelech.

“You’ve got to stick up for your teammates,” Rechlicz said.

“We knew it was going to be a tough hockey game, both physically and mentally, before the game. I thought we did a pretty good job battling with them out there.”

Sommer and Paddock were teammates on the 1983-84 Maine Mariners. In two or three years, Sommer could theoretically catch and pass Paddock.

“That’s a lot of years, a lot of bus miles,” Sommer said. “But, hey, we’ll see what happens.”

Worcester Sharks head coach Roy Sommer had nearly resigned himself to having to wait another day to achieve AHL career victory No. 500.
